AIA EDIG recommends PLCS
The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Engineering Data Interoperability Group (EDIG) recommends that AIA member companies and suppliers transition to a standards-based interoperability solution utilizing PLCS (ISO 10303-239) and its associated DEXs.

Across the aerospace industry, the need for efficient data exchange has never been greater. Aerospace companies have increasingly focused on the role of systems integrator, relying on partners and suppliers to provide significant portions of their aircraft designs. Meeting the requirement for integration and collaboration, however, has been costly and time-consuming given the disparate set of applications and methods typically employed presents. This White Paper summarizes the AIA Engineering Data Interoperability Group's activities, their related findings, and their recommendations.

Eurostep Limited contracted by the UK Defence Logistics Organization
Eurostep Limited has been contracted to help the UK Defence Logistics Organization further develop Logistic Information Plans for the A400M Military Transport Aircraft and the Type 45 Frigate.

The PLCS and OAGIS standards have been selected by UK MoD for use on all new equipment and support contracts. The business benefits from using PLCS are explained in the Technology White Paper Standards-based PLM: Re-engineering the Aftermarket with PLCS, Part 1 Business Benefits. OAGIS (www.openapplication.org) is a related standard for supply chain transactions.

Work on the Type 45 will identify where these standards could most effectively be applied to support the Frigates in service, when "Contracting for Availability" (CfA). The aim is to identify which exchanges offer the greatest potential for early cost savings and quality improvements, in the context of the introduction of the Type 45 Frigate into service.

On A400M, which is also exploring a CfA approach, the aim is to identify, and to provide guidance on costing, all of the steps involved in progressing:
- from a high level definition of an information exchange of interest (such as those described by the information flow arrows in MoDs' Logistic Coherence Information Architecture (LCIA) model)
- to a fully developed information exchange agreement, based on a PLCS Data Exchange Set (DEX). For more information about DEXs, please download Standards-based PLM: Re-engineering the Aftermarket with PLCS, Part 2 Technologies and Deployments.

The work will draw heavily on Eurostep's experience in developing PLCS, the LCIA and the Through Life Support Standard, which UK MoD are developing as a potential replacement for DEF STAN 00-60, and will support activity within the UK MoD to bring these initiatives together.

For more information about Eurostep's work for the UK Defence Logistics Organization please contact John Dunford.

"Re-engineering the Aftermarket with PLCS: Part 2 Technologies and Deployments"
A coherent information environment in which the necessary data are available to all participating actors is a prerequisite for efficient product support.

PLCS can be thought of as a new “world map” for product support. Like any new map, PLCS contains much that is familiar – a maintenance task is still a maintenance task – and many new discoveries.

Just like a map, PLCS can be used in different ways. One is to solve business problems by automating data exchange between existing systems. PLCS can also be used to support a major update of processes across an entire organization.

This white paper written by John Stark in co-operation with Eurostep describes the standard itself and explains how an organization can implement PLCS to achieve tangible business benefits. Examples are provided of PLCS projects in some well known organizations.

For more information please contact Ulrika Peterson.

Industry training on the Virtual Enterprise Collaboration Hub
When companies work together to produce a product, it is important that they share and exchange information in an efficient and secure way. One of the aims of the partly EU-funded VIVACE project is to develop concepts, standards, and tools that let companies quickly and easily create a virtual organization.

What is important in this kind of co-operation? Companies agree that it is important to share exactly the right information required to achieve the goal - neither more, nor less. In today's highly competitive environment, global co-operation - often with "business colleagues" - is becoming an everyday reality. Sometimes even a necessity. Therefore, the need for efficient protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) is an ever more pressing issue alongside information sharing.

The Virtual Enterprise Collaboration Hub creates the freedom to co-operate on equal terms, while safeguarding IPR. Learn more about the VEC-hub concept and project by clicking here.

Between the 26th and 29th of November, a VEC-hub-training is offered in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Participants will learn how to implement, use and exploit the benefits of the VEC-hub. The training is hosted by Bombardier Aerospace. For more information about the training, click here, or download the invitation. You are welcome to contact Dr. Väino Tarandi, responsible for Eurostep's participation in the VEC-hub project.

Taking the next step with standards at European Tech Data Conference, October 1st - 5th
”PLCS – S1000D – ADL SCORM: Three specifications – one future? Co-existence? Harmonisation? Integration?” is the conference theme for the European Tech Data Conference which will be held at Gardermoen in Norway between the 1st and 5th of October. The scope of the conference will span the user perspective, software integration challenges and ROI as well as experience from several different industries.

Nigel Shaw, a Director of Eurostep Group, provided the technical lead during the development of the PLCS-standard. During the conference, Nigel will give a presentation on “PLCS – where to go next”. Areas addressed in the presentation will include the take up of PLCS and the long term vision for the standard. The latter will suggest how the practical integration with S1000D and SCORM can be achieved and the development of additional DEXs (Data Exchange Sets). In addition, Nigel will present how implementation of PLCS is significantly speeded up by the use of web services.

Dr Mattias Johansson, Director Software Products at Eurostep, will deliver a presentation focusing on the uptake and usage of the PLCS standard. The PLCS standard was originally designed to enable information exchange within the product lifecycle. Recent implementations have shown the value of the standard as an integrator of information derived from different domains within the lifecycle of a product. Mattias will show how it acts as an enabler for consolidation of information across different types of boundaries.

Examples presented range from simple exchange to complex change management across multiple organizations and lifecycle phases simultaneously. Organizations who have already implemented and are benefiting from PLCS-based information integration include US Army, Volvo, BAE Systems Hägglunds, Motorola and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

For more information about Eurostep’s contribution to the event, please contact Nigel Shaw.

Eurostep's Share-A-space to enable design and support integration between Army and OEM
Eurostep has been contracted by the US Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) to provide Share-A-space, Eurostep’s innovative Product Data collaborative environment, which is based on the ISO 10303-239 PLCS (Product Life Cycle Support) International Standard.

By using Share-A-space, TARDEC will improve its working processes with AM General, the manufacturer of the HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle). The higher level of collaboration between TARDEC and AM General achieved by using Share-A-space will enable improved processes with better change management, clearer information ownership and will eliminate the need for manual data re-entry. The information scope will include both product design and support information and Share-A-space will link these two areas, allowing change to be synchronized across them.

“TARDEC is very excited to evaluate the possibilities that come with a standardized approach to lifecycle data management through using PLCS. The Share-A-space product has the potential to serve as the middleware necessary to bridge enterprise systems across the extended Army enterprise”, said Dr. Raj Iyer, Program manager for PLM for TARDEC.

Eurostep invited to Lockheed Martin symposium
Eurostep has been invited to the Lockheed Martin Symposium "Mission Critical Enterprise Systems", October 23-26 in Orlando FL, USA. Eurostep will both be exhibiting and presenting at the symposium. The event focuses on how information sharing and collaboration are cornerstones of profitable growth.

Through Eurostep's deep commitment to the development and implementation of the ISO standard for Product Lifecycle Support, PLCS, the company has unique knowledge in this area.

Dr. Mattias Johansson will run a workshop on how to realise the potential value from implementing PLCS in your organisation, by integrating information from a wide range of existing engineering systems such as ERP, PLM, CAD and Product Support.

The interest in using PLCS by defense organisations in the US, the UK, Norway and Sweden is growing, and several programs are now committed to its use.

This presentation will give the background and a brief introduction to the PLCS standard, as well as describe how it can be deployed. The training material used is part of the course material which Eurostep offers regularly in the US. Organisations which have already sent participants to the training include Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and Boeing, as well as representatives from several branches of the US DoD.

For more information about the workshop Eurostep is hosting and where to meet our representatives during the symposium, please contact Ulrika Peterson, ulrika.peterson@eurostep.com.
