BIM Collaboration Hub

BIM is a relatively new technology. It is PLM but for the building industry. As with PLM it is about more than geometry and BIM includes cost management and project management. It is about concurrent engineering and new ways of working together across a building’s life cycle. BIM is about data sharing. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is an open specification for Building Information Modeling. PLCS is an ISO standard for managing life cycle information about any product (ISO 10303-239).

The BIM Collaboration Hub is based on the combination of IFC and PLCS. This combination is the ideal one combining the strength of IFC with the product life cycle support in PLCS allowing all involved in a building project not just to share typical BIM data, but adding life cycle process quality. Key concepts are built into our solution allowing a network of software applications and organisations to share BIM data. The BIM Collaboration Hub is designed for the extended/virtual enterprise, the typical setup for a building project. This includes the concepts of allowing multiple identifiers, notification services, ownership of information, IPR protection etc. A requirement for a cost efficient BIM Hub is that in-house IT systems and processes can be kept in order to avoid switching cost, re-training and endless discussions about what could be the best solution. Eurostep’s solution drastically reduces time for implementation since all partners can use what they have.

BIM Issues and Opportunities

  • Minimize cost of construction and cost of ownership

  • Need to share BIM data across the life cycle and organisations

  • Tracing requirements to functions to systems and building elements

  • Keep existing in house IT SW tools and processes

  • Be able to simple retrieval of previous sets of information with versioning over time

  • High quality and efficient hand over of BIM data to owners and operators
