The extended enterprise exists for many different reasons, and takes many different shapes. A key factor for successful collaboration in the extended enterprise is efficient and secure sharing of information.
Business situations requiring extended enterprise collaboration are multiple:
· Collaborative projects, where sharing of product data for requirements, designs, manufacturing and product support is needed.
· Outsourcing where skills and resources are shared.
· Offset contracts requiring outsourced engineering, manufacturing and knowledge transfer.
|
The overall need is for information to be up to date, valid and accessible when needed for the parties involved. This has to be made possible also in environments where collaboration partners have different internal processes and IT systems. In all aspects the environment is heterogeneous. To further add to the complexity, partners and their IT may and will change over time. The concept of agility has to be in the core design of the collaboration and not treated as an exception. This requires information to be managed in a neutral hub with a strong emphasis on information ownership and access control.

in the Extended Enterprise - the Share-A-space solution

Efficient collaboration requires sharing of information making it possible to manage the complexity in engineering changes across organization borders. It is vital that the information from a number of different information sources is consolidated in a neutral hub to provide the extended enterprise with a complete picture valid for the collaboration project. With this in place the partner organizations can continue to operate individually using their own IT systems and processes. This is the preferred and most efficient way of operations for the individual organization, and creates the competitive edge also for the extended enterprise.

The Virtual Enterprise
The extended enterprise deals with relations that are expected to be stable over a determined period. In an environment where the collective enterprise is more agile and opportunistic, the concept referred to is the virtual enterprise. It is usually based on opportunities and specific projects, with the virtual enterprise formed for a specific opportunity. This situation is also valid for suppliers in the second tier and below where there are less strong links than between the primes and the first tier. All the requirements for information exchange and sharing from the extended enterprise still apply, but with even more emphasis on keeping the involved parties separate but well connected. |
