Digital twin-based decision making (Master Thesis)

As industry is taking part in more efforts in terms of digitalization, especially with the introduction of concepts regarding smart manufacturing, increased needs for accurate handling of lifecycle information for digital twins are arising.

Eurostep offers a master thesis where you, based on industry best-practice, develop a strategy on how to accurately define the information need for digital twins. 

Background 

As industry is taking part in more efforts in terms of digitalization, especially with the introduction of concepts regarding smart manufacturing, increased needs for accurate handling of lifecycle information for digital twins are arising. Structured information is needed to be able to represent the products and processes of the manufacturing industry to be able to analyze the information to create knowledge and use this knowledge in the following development cycles. 

However, all industries are different, and different information is needed for different purposes. Eurostep AB is working within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Domain and is interested in what ways the PLM domain needs to change due to these requirements. Therefore, an overall strategy on how to tackle these requirements is needed. Based on industry best-practice, a strategy on how to develop accurate information for the digital twins is needed. 

Project scope 

This master thesis work should answer the question how a lifecycle based digital twin representation of physical products may be used for decision making considering its manufacturability, usability/performance and maintainability in a smart manufacturing context. The software ShareAspace, developed by Eurostep AB, will provide the lifecycle management software to be used to test out these ideas. Since the software is based on the ISO standard 10303-239 (Product Life Cycle Support/PLCS), the findings should be placed in this standards’ context. 

The ongoing DigIn project will work as a basis for a proof of concept, where the proposed ideas will be tested and realized.  

The project should cover: 

  • Literature review 
  • Information gathering and state of art 
  • Selection of strategy 
  • Implementation of strategy 
  • Documentation of solution 
  • Proposal of future work incl. dissemination

Your profile 

We are looking for one or preferably two students that wants to work together. We believe that you are a master student at one of Sweden’s Technical universities like the Royal Institute of Technology and that you are studying a master program related to Engineering Science or Industrial Engineering and Management.
